=== CHARTERING CEREMONY UPDATE ===

Plans for the April 20, 2002 chartering ceremony are progressing nicely. The event, to be at the Monroe Plaza Hotel, will begin at 6:30 with refreshments. The program will begin about 7:30 and is expected to last about an hour. Mark your calendars and plan to bring your families. Adults are being asked to contribute $10 to help cover costs; there is no cost for children.

IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO TURN IN ADS FOR THE PROGRAM BOOKLET! Bryan Pope, who is spearheading the effort to gather ads, says the absolute deadline for turning in ads is Monday, April 15. So, please, think of businesses or individuals who might want to congratulate the club and/or share information about their business with Rotary members. Ads are $50, $75 and $150.

=== NEW MEMBERS AND NEW OFFICER ===

Please welcome our newest members, Jim Chilcutt and Mark Kiesling! If you know either of these fine gentlemen, give them a welcoming call. Otherwise, please introduce yourselves at the next meeting. They are great additions to a great club! And congratulations go to Lora Nelson who was elected by the Board to succeed Jim Libey as vice president and membership chair, effective May 1. Jim, as you all probably know, has been transferred to Iowa.

'''PLEASE DO YOUR PART TO RECRUIT NEW MEMBERS.'''

=== PROGRAM UPDATE ===

Next week’s program will be on plans for re-doing the sidewalks downtown. Thanks to Bryan Pope for lining up a speaker.

This week’s program was autobiographical sketches given by President Vic and treasurer Haroun. Vic grew up in Virginia and after graduating from the University of Richmond and a brief stint working for candidates for the state house, gravitated to public health. He has been with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention for about 20 years, mostly in TB control and several years in Immunization. Along the way he earned a master’s in public administration. He and his wife Susan have moved around a bit, but Vic has told CDC this is it - he likes Jefferson City and doesn’t want to move again.

Haroun, a native of Sierra Leone, came to Jefferson City to study at Lincoln University 10 years ago, at the urging of a brother who was here, and has been here ever since. He earned bachelor and master degrees from Lincoln and is an accountant with the Department of Health. He is married to Bernard Collier’s sister, Anne Edith Kanga. They have an eight-month old daughter, Zaryn Nallah Bintu Kamara. Haroun is named for his grandfather, a former Ambassador to Egypt from Sierra Leone. Ask him about his arrival in the United States! The keyword in that question might be weather…..
