Jefferson City Evening Rotary Club – June 17, 2002 Meeting Update
Lora Nelson, Vice President, called the meeting to order and recognized Bryan Pope to introduce the evening’s program. Dave Luther and Yuris, a rotary youth exchange student from Latvia, provided the club with a wonderful perspective on Rotary’s International Youth Exchange Program:
* The Rotary exchange program is the best because foreign students immediately become a part of a large, extended Rotarian family when they come to Jefferson City.
* Dave Luther went to Australia on a youth exchange trip and still has friends visit from Australia almost every year. He, along with several members of the club, felt that more Jefferson City youth should participate in the outbound program.
* Everyone recognized some of the roadblocks to the outbound exchange program, including a reluctant school administration in the past, and agreed the problem should be addressed.
* Yuris provided a few humorous insights into the experiences of an exchange student.
* Our very own Dean Lawrence and his family are in the final process of becoming a host family for the program.
Thanks to both presenters. You did a wonderful job!
Our June 24, 2002 meeting will include a program on the upcoming Lewis & Clark Centennial Celebration.
The club welcomed Nancie McAnaugh to Rotary as an official member. Once again, welcome Nancie and we look forward to the many ways you will improve our club. Remember the club goal of 50 members by the end of the year and be thinking of making a big push for members in August (Membership Month)!
There will be a board meeting on July 1st after the regular Rotary meeting. Also remember Duane Benton’s installation ceremony on July 8th at McClung Park. We all need to RSVP to the event by July 1st , at a cost of $12 per person. Send checks made payable to “Rotary District 6080” to: Zoe W. Lyle, Rotary Event Chairman, 100 East High, Suite 301, Jefferson City, MO 65101.
The Habitat for Humanity work-day is scheduled for July 13th at the Cherry St. house the club worked on last time. Please let Harry or Suzanne know if you will be able to work and/or provide lunch for the wonderful project. Our last work day was a great success. Thanks to Harry and Suzanne for this service opportunity.
Club contributions are past due. With no further business, the meeting adjourned. See you on Monday!
