Club Business

Our **club family outing** is scheduled for Saturday September 6 at the Libey's (Lake Champetra). Water activities start at 2:30. BBQ supper and evening activities follow.

Our fall **flower bulb fundraiser** is started. Suzanne Richter passed out the order forms.

**Rotary Zone Institute** will be held in Kansas City's Westin Crown Center, September 19-20. The schedule includes lunch with Rotary International President **Jonathan B. Majiyagbe** on Friday, Zone Institute Seminar, and a luncheon on Saturday. Harry Richter will coordinate sign-up, the deadline is September 10.

Program

**Carol Pleus**, of the Missouri Department of Transportation (**MoDOT**), spoke about **Missouri's Adopt-A-Highway program**. Our club is adopting two miles of the newly-opened segment of Missouri Highway 179.

The first highway adoption program was started in Texas, and now 48 states have similar programs in place. Missouri's program started in 1987, and now 3400+ groups have adopted 5000+ miles of highway in the state. However, with 32000+ total miles of state roadway, Missouri has plenty more opportunities for adoption! Types of adoption available include mowing, beautification, and the most popular: litter clean-up.

Organizations which adopt a highway for litter cleanup are expected to pick up trash on at least two occasions during each six-month period. MoDOT provides informational literature, safety training, safety vests and flags, and trash bags. MoDOT also provides the signature blue roadsign, adorned with coreopsis (a native flower), proclaiming the group's committment to their stretch of highway.

Carol also showed videos produced by Missouri high school students for the "No MOre Trash" campaign. The club enjoyed the humor and creativity of the students.

The club officers signed the agreement with MoDOT for our highway adoption, and the members present watched the required training video. Upon agency approval, we will be ready to roll!

Board Meeting

Following the raffle and the closing, a board meeting was convened. A report will be released soon.
