Zone Institute
Harry and Suzanne attended the **Zone Institute** in Kansas City last weekend.
Suzanne attended a workshop on Polio Plus. Some observations: Polio exists in only 7 countries now (Nigeria, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh.) Less than 200 new cases last year. 165 million children vaccinated in one day in India recently, by WHO, Rotary, and other groups. Some new cases come from the vaccine itself (the no-risk vaccine we use in the US costs 25 times as much.
Harry described the different "funds" managed by the Rotary Foundation. Paul Harris donations go towards the "Permanent" fund, except this year, where those donations could also go towards the Polio Plus fund. There is also an "Annual" fund - where small amounts are applied to big needs in developing countries.
Unfortunately, Harry and Suzanne missed the RI President's presentation. It is possible that Jerry Venters got a written copy of the speech, that he would share with us.
Club Business
Requests from President Laura:
- would like to have a presentation on the Rotary Foundation.
- We need ideas for a **new fundraiser**
- We need ideas for club meeting programs.
We received a thank you note from Hospice for our donation.
RACS sent their "Wish List" of items that they need.
We earned about $300 from our fall bulb sales.
The next Habitat for Humanity project will be October 18. Habitat's Chicken Dinner fundraiser is October 1 - DJ is selling tickets.
We have cancelled our BBQ fundraiser on Oct 11.
Program: Mulima Walusiku on International Service
$88.5 million raised so far for Polio Plus in the current campaign (Goal was $80M.) This in addition to the more than $500 million raised in past years.
**Donation Drive** - our club will be collecting clothing and other items for the Kasisi Orphanage in Zambia. Mulima did a lot of research to pick an agency in Zambia that would make good use of our donation. The orphanage serves babies, children, street kids, and children with HIV/AIDS (we will publish more details.)
Mulima's sister in Zambia is arranging for a shipping container to be sent to Zambia. We will have a collection day on October 11 (proposed). People will bring donations to a central location. We will announce details as soon as possible.
Mulima shared some personal stories about how the AIDS epidemic has affected her nation. She has lost her parents and many other relatives to the epidemic. The average life expectancy in Zambia is only 38.
