Club Business

Club family picnic at Libey's Sep 6 - was a great success.

Bulb Sale deadline today.

Tony Hiesberger and Hal Dulle discussed BBQ fundraiser. Suggesting Oct 11 (LU homecoming and MU Nebraska game).

October 18 - our next Habitat for Humanity service project. Habitat chicken dinner Oct 1 - volunteers and tickets will be coordinated by DJ .

Sep 19-20 - Zone institute in KC. RI President speaks Friday Lunch ($25). Signup Deadline Seo 10.


Program: Jim Clardy, Director, Rape and Abuse Crisis Service (RACS)

Jim worked for 20 years in transportation regulation. Was hired for RACS job primarily for experience with grants and funding.

Some statistics:

* 250 domestic violence incidents per year in Cole Co (probably 25% of actual number)

* 25 rapes per year in Cole County (1 in 7 reported)

* RACS provides services for 6 counties

* RACS runs a 36-bed (9 roomsx4) shelter for women and children only.

* RACS does assist several men each year.

* Hotline fields 1750 crisis calls per year.

* 24 member Board of Directors.

* United Way member since 1984.


Professional staff include shelter managers and a volunteer coordinator. A Legal Advocate based at the Cole County courthouse handles 500 cases per year. Services available (and encouraged) for shelter residents include counseling, parenting classes and house meetings.

Funding for RACS comes from Federal and State funds (Victims of Crime Act, etc), United Way, Court fees and donations.

Some yearly activities:

* October art display at Library.

* April Sexual Abuse awareness month.

* Blues and BBQ fundraiser

* Christmas adoptions (~50 families)

* Multicultural Forum
